On Saturday, March 6, the Diamond
team of Mark Lipson, Liz
Marcil, Steve Johnson, Tsubasa Takizawa, and Bo Zhu coveted the state
title, winning by an unprecedented margin over 87 other schools in
Massachusetts. The team had advanced to the state finals by scoring a
first place victory at the Chapter level competition a month earlier
at the William Middle School in Chelsea.
Mark Lipson is the official state individual champion, having made the top score on the 30-question sprint round and the 8-question target round. Liz Marcil won the Countdown Round competition, having broken a 2-2 tie with Mark Lipson. Steve Johnson finished in 8th place, and Tsubasa Takizawa came in 21st. Bo Zhu, the team's alternate, would have come in 19th place if his score were allowed to count.
Especially exciting is that Liz and Mark were among the top four finishers, and won all-expenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Finals on May 13. Mr. Mosca, having coached Diamond to the state title, will coach the state team and accompany them to Washington.
Good luck to Liz, Mark, and Mr. Mosca!
