On Saturday, March 3, 2001, the Diamond Mathcounts team (pictured above) captured the title of State Champions, finishing ahead of more than 90 teams across Massachusetts.
All four students finished in the top 11, an unprecedented finish for an entire team! David Wen tied for 4th place (ended up 5th on a tie-breaker), Jon Poage tied for 6th place, David Iba tied for 8th, and Gillian Stewart tied for 11th. Each team member barely missed advancing to the national finals in May. However, due to Diamond's first place finish, Mr. Mosca will coach the state team which will compete in May in Washington, D.C.
Each student received the coveted first place trophy. In addition, David Wen earned two more trophies - one for being the top 7th grader, and one for finishing in 5th place overall.
David Wen, Jon, and David Iba participated in the Countdown Round at the conclusion of the competition. David Iba won three round, Jon won two, and David won one.
Diamond last won the state title in 1999, a year when Diamond students Mark Lipson and Liz Marcil went on to compete at the Nationals, and came home with the title of 1999 National Team Champions.
Congratulations to our state champions!
