The Mathcounts State Finals were held this past Saturday, March 4, and the Diamond MATHCOUNTS team of David Iba, Li-Mei Lim, Jonathon Poage, Ben Croes, and Tsubasa Takizawa finished a respectable seventh place among the 90 teams in Massachusetts who participated this year.
Approximately 8000 students in Massachusetts participated in Mathcounts this year. Individually, out of the 100 finalists at the state finals, all of the Diamond students finished in the top 50. Li-Mei Lim competed in the final countdown round, and won two rounds, finishing in 7th place. Tsubasa Takizawa set another new state record for the highest score ever achieved by an alternate, and would have finished in sixth place if his score had been allowed to count.
Congratulations to our Diamond Mathcounts team for another strong finish!
Monday, February 7
Mathcounts teams from Clarke and Diamond Middle Schools will advance to the state competition in March, having accomplished an amazing 1-2 finish at the regional Chapter competition, which was held at the Williams Middle School in Chelsea. Twenty-five teams from around the Greater Boston area competed, with each school sending its top four competitors and an alternate.
The Clarke team finished in first place with 52.5 points out of a possible 66, while Diamond was runner-up with 47.5 points. This is the first time in the 18 years of Massachusetts' participation that two schools from the same town finished 1-2.
Individually, Clarke's Adam Rosenfield came in first place, while Diamond's Li-Mei Lim finished in a tie for 2nd. Diamond's Tsubasa Takizawa set a new state record, posting the highest score ever among alternates. David Iba from Diamond received an award as the highest-scoring 7th grader, finishing in 6th place overall. Rounding out the Clarke roster were Adam Fried (10th), Ben Guth (18th), and Yuen-Joyce Liu (24th). Albert Chen was Clarke's alternate. Diamond's complement included Ben Croes (14th) and Jonathon Poage (20th). Clarke is coached by Ms. Michelle Wetter, who teaches grade 6 mathematics at Clarke, and coaches the Clarke math team. Diamond's coach is Mr. Evagrio Mosca, who teaches grade 8 mathematics at Diamond, and coaches the Diamond math team.
The next phase of the MathCounts competitions
is the state competition, which will be held on Saturday, March 6 at
Wentworth Institute. The top four teams from each of the regional
competitions will participate. Each of the top four students from
that competition will win an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington,
D.C. to compete at the national finals. Last year, it was two Diamond
students - Mark Lipson and Liz Marcil - who comprised half of the
Massachusetts state team which won the United States championship
under the leadership of the Diamond coach, Evagrio Mosca. Liz and
Mark each won $2000, a laptop computer, a graphing calculator, and a
week at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.
